At the age of 15 I was told that I would likely never be able to get pregnant because of serious anomalies in my reproductive organs. At the age of 18, I got pregnant. I was in my first year at university, and I knew the only option for me was to have an abortion. I was so fortunate that the procedure was legal and that every person I encountered throughout the experience was professional and non-judgmental. I have two children and my first granddaughter was born just three weeks ago. Had I not had the abortion, I would never have moved to Poland and started my family. All abortion in my adopted country is now virtually illegal. Abortion is basic health care and a basic human right. The actions of the Polish government are shameful and an outrage in the twenty-first century.

I was determined to have the abortion, but I was also scared. I was supported by my friends and healthcare providers. Later, when I told my mother about the abortion she was also supportive and loving. I have never regretted my decision.
